For practicing with play-alongs: Amazing Slowdowner For making transcriptions by ear: Transcribe! They will all slow down music, change pitch, and loop sections from music files, but their interfaces and features make each of them easier and better for specific purposes: It really boils down to exactly what you want to do. I do not notice a difference in sound quality between them. Amazing Slowdowner is better for practicing with play-alongs because you can import a whole gig's playlist at once and go back and forth from one tune to another with a click. And al three will work directly with Youtube videos. And Audacity has myriad ways to edit music I use Audacity frequently to turn a 20-second play-along exercise into a four-minute play-along exercise. But Transcribe! has this Mix feature, too. Formerly, I had to carry around a short adapter cable that I built to do that. Much better than just hearing it in your right ear only. With the Mix control, when you slide it all the way over to the right, not only is the left channel cut out, but the right channel shifts to the center, so you hear it equally in both ears of your headphones. I very much like the fact that, unlike my previous slowdowner, Amazing Slowdowner has a Mix control, rather than a Balance or Pan control. But it does not have a wave form window like Transcribe! and Audacity have. It will save any number of loops, processed or not, with or without up to 99 repetitions in the loop. The Amazing Slowdowner guy has a separate program to slowdown DVDs or TS_Video folders but it won't do mp4's or avi's plus it costs extra.Īmazing Slowdowner will work on files or CDs, either oneyour choice with a click. Transcribe will do the same with video files. With all of these, they sound great at 1/2 speed and I rarely have to venture below 50%, I'm not always transcribing Bird or Stitt.

The Superscope software has a waveform display but is a little awkward to use as you have to import your tracks to it and it has its own little music library system. The others get a little underwatery below 35%. It blows the others away on the 1/5 speed playback. The absolute best slowdown quality however is the Superscope Elevation software. Or if I really need to slow down something to 20%. For just figuring out a quick riff or solo for coverband stuff, I use Amazing Slow Downer.

I use Transcribe when I am transcribing a full jazz solo and notating it, the mearsure markers really help for that. Oh yeah the other big plus for transcribe is the ability to watch and slow down video files too, I use it occasionally. The special note detection feature isn't too good. The audio quality is good but below 40% speed Amazing starts to pull away in quality. After you set it up then you can easily navigate to a certain spot like bars 4-8 of the B section of the second chorus. Transcribe's best featurenis the waveform display and being able to mark beats and measures and sections by tapping on the computer while listening to the track. Amazing Slow Downer is a little faster to use and has better audio quality when you really slow things down plus its nice that you can save presets of your loop points, you can make playlists for rehearsing tunes.
